At 94 years old, Ms. Emma has learned that healthy aging is not about quick fixes. It is about consistency, connection, and access to the right support.
Ms. Emma, an immigrant and retired nurse, has been part of the Meals on Wheels Chesapeake community for nine years. In our 2026 survey, she shared that her kidney health has improved over the past year and a half. Her nephrologist was amazed by the results! Ms. Emma also shared that she has appreciated the relationships she has built within our community. “The volunteers are very friendly and helpful,” she says. “They take my trash can up sometimes and check my mail if I need them to.”
Her story reflects the significance that research on certain communities around the world, known as Blue Zones, has long shown: people live longer, healthier lives not because of a single “superfood,” but because of consistent habits and supportive environments that make healthy choices easier over time. Blue Zones are regions where people live longer, healthier lives, with high concentrations of centenarians and low rates of chronic disease, driven by shared lifestyle and environmental factors rather than any single intervention.
Nutrition needs evolve with age, and we take that seriously. Our person-centered approach and evidence-based model, More Than a Meal, brings these same principles to life here in Chesapeake. By integrating nutrition, social connection, safety, and resource coordination, we support older adults in aging in place with dignity and independence.
One key lesson from Blue Zones is a plant-forward approach to eating, centered on beans, vegetables, whole grains, and other minimally processed foods. At Meals on Wheels Chesapeake, older adults receive 30 servings of fruit and vegetables, 4 servings of beans, and 10 servings of whole grains weekly. This approach encourages each meal to consist of a thoughtful balance, providing two-thirds of the recommended daily nutrients our older neighbors need.
Participants like Ms. Emma show us that healthier habits can take root at any stage of life. By being part of our community, she receives both nourishment and connection each week: 10 meals–a hot lunch and a chilled dinner–delivered by caring and attentive volunteers. Each meal is prepared by a Registered Dietitian and medically tailored when necessary to strengthen the overall health of our participants.
Lastly, the meals are prepared by ServSafe-certified cooks at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, a valued community partner since 1977, with careful attention to limiting sodium, added sugars, and unhealthy fats. We also offer texture-modified options and additional dietary accommodations to ensure every participant can eat safely and comfortably.
The impact is clear. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of participants report moving toward or maintaining a healthy weight since enrolling, and 99% report eating healthier overall.
Blue Zones research reminds us that small, sustainable habits matter. The longest-lived populations in the world eat nourishing foods day after day, not just occasionally. That consistency, paired with connection and support, is what makes lasting health possible.
This National Nutrition Month, we celebrate the power of nutrition to support not just longer lives, but healthier, more independent ones. We thank our participants, volunteers, donors, and community partners for making this work possible.
Because, as Ms. Emma reminds us, good nutrition and meaningful connection support health, independence, and dignity at every age.
