HOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We Deliver More Than Meals

Since 1977, Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake (MOWC) has provided nutritious home-delivered meals, safety checks, social connection, and care coordination for older and disabled homebound residents who live alone, cannot grocery shop or cook healthy meals, and have no assistance with meal prep.

Success Stories

Your being here to support me (I live alone) has greatly enhanced my confidence that I am not alone, and were I to need outside help, MOW staff would be there! Seriously! I do not naturally trust many folks, and I do not ask for anything. That said, you all have supported me during my time down to an extent far greater than what I signed on for…easily as healing and welcome as the food.

The volunteers are great and so cheerful. Having new faces is a blessing and the cards, candy, gifts are really nice. Thank you for working to provide seniors with food because some would go hungry without it!

Elderly-woman-sitting-peach-top

Meals on Wheels has helped regulate my diet and has helped with medical conditions. I am very thankful for ALL they do! All of the volunteers are always a delight to see and talk to! I am very thankful for all the staff at Meals on Wheels. Thank you so much!

Monday through Friday, we deliver nourishment, connection, & safety checks to homebound neighbors.

On Monday, volunteer Lisa Woodley was delivering meals at Starling Village when she saw that a fire had started near the apartment of an elderly resident we serve. She leaped into action to help that resident, and others, to safety. Thank you WAVY TV 10 for sharing her story of courage and service.

Volunteers like Lisa inspire us while demonstrating the importance of our work! It's more than a meal: it's a caring neighbor at the door, and a daily safety check that sometimes saves lives! We cannot serve our community without our community. This is a team effort!

Woodley has been delivering meals with Meals on Wheels for six years now. On Monday, she was making deliveries to residents at Starling Village apartments, a 55+ community off South Military Highway. That’s when she noticed a fire that had started in a resident’s apartment.

More Than a Meal: The Power of Human Connection 💚

For many of the older adults we serve, a Meals on Wheels volunteer may be the only person they see all day—or even all week.

That friendly conversation, wellness check, and familiar smile can mean just as much as the meal itself.

One participant shared:

"They make me feel like someone cares."

As Social Wellness Month comes to a close, we're reflecting on why human connection is essential to healthy aging and how our volunteers help older adults remain nourished, safe, connected, and never alone.

Read our newest blog to learn how Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake is helping address loneliness through compassionate care, innovative programs, and the power of community.
