During this time of record inflation and increased demand for our medically-tailored meals, safety checks, social connection, and connection to community resources, you can help end hunger and isolation among elderly and disabled neighbors in our community by donating today.

A donation of $7 provides two meals and a safety check, and $35 provides ten meals and safety checks for a week for a homebound older, disabled neighbor.

Just $1,778 feeds a homebound neighbor in Chesapeake for an entire year – a fraction of the cost of assisted living.

Need more reasons to donate? According to the results of our 2022 Participant Survey:

  • Nearly half would see no one else for a week or more if it weren’t for our volunteers.
  • 77% feel less isolated because of Meals on Wheels.

  • 99% of participants look forward to seeing their volunteer each day.
  • 96% say that our meals keep them healthy or improve their health.

Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake is a 501(c)(3) community service nonprofit organization founded in 1977 and located at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, which generously donates our office space. We are a United Way of South Hampton Roads agency since 2020, a member organization of Meals on Wheels America since 2020, and a contractual partner with Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia, our Area Agency on Aging, since 2021.

We promote well-being for homebound neighbors through the use of evidence-based practices as outlined in Meals on Wheels America’s “More Than a Meal” body of research, including the delivery of nutritious meals and safety checks by vetted volunteers; social connection; and connection to community resources. Our goal is to help participants age in place nutritiously, affordably, and with dignity and independence in their homes and communities.

We are a caring community of over 150 participants and rising; over 300 volunteers and rising; donors; community partners; and staff, two full-time and two part-time.

Food Lion Feeds + Meals on Wheels America Go Further Fund Grant

CHESAPEAKE, VIRGINIA—Through a national partnership with Meals on Wheels America, Food Lion Feeds has donated $26,500 to MEALS ON WHEELS OF CHESAPEAKE in an effort to feed local senior neighbors in their time of need and serve the increased demand for Meals on Wheels in the community. Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake will use grant funds to invest in equipment upgrades and free meals for neighbors experiencing food-insecurity and living at or below 132% of the 2023 Federal Poverty Level.

On the United Way of South Hampton Roads Day of Caring, Lisa Bednarczyk, Store Manager of Food Lion Store 201, and Carolyn Wells, Store Manager of Food Lion Store 752, present two checks from Food Lion Feeds totaling $26,500 to Megan Mann, Program Director of Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake, with our wonderful volunteers, new and old, present.
